Ornament and Object is a project started by two Chicago-based metalsmith/jewelers, Sarah Holden and Mike Ruta. Our mission is to promote thoughtful and carefully crafted jewelry and objects to the Chicago community through curated exhibitions and pop-up galleries.
Sarah Holden received her MFA in Studio Art with a focus in Jewelry and Metalsmithing from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee and her BFA in Crafts/Material Studies and Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University. Sarah exhibits her one-of-a-kind jewelry and sculpture both nationally and internationally and is represented by Quirk Gallery, Heidi Lowe Gallery, Penland Gallery, Equinox Gallery, and The Society for Contemporary Craft. Sarah currently lives in Chicago where she maintains her own studio practice and teaches Fabricated Metalworking and Forging at the Chicago Industrial Arts and Design Center. Sarah’s artistic practice explores how female identity and power are constructed, performed and presented through the body.
Mike received his undergraduate BFA at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee with a focus in metalsmithing. After working at numerous custom jewelry studios, including Jim Cotter Studio in Colorado, he moved to Chicago and has been working at his bench ever since. He loves exploring materials and making everything from fine to fun jewelry.
